Pepperdine beats Portland 80-65 for first win in the West Coast Conference

1/16/21 MALIBU, Ca - The Pepperdine Waves Men's Basketball Team with a record of (4-6, WCC 0-1) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon hosted the Portland Pilots (6-6, WCC 0-3) in a West Coast Conference showdown, got their first win in the conference with an 80-65 victory.

Colbey Ross (G) lead the Waves in scoring with 18.0 ppg, Kessler Edwards 16.9 ppg, and Kene Chukwuka (F) 9.1 ppg. The Pilots' Eddie Davis (F) is their leading scorer averaging 11.5 ppg, followed by Latrell Jones (G) 9.2 ppg and Isiah Dasher (G) 8.8 ppg.

The Waves took an 8-2 lead after two back-to-back three-pointers by Chukwuka, Edwards, and a layup by Chukwuka. The Pilots tied the game 12-12 after a made basket by Chukwuka.

The Waves regained the lead 16-12, after a basket by Edwards with 12:08 left in the first half. The Pilots trail the Waves 19-14 after a three-pointer by Robbie Heath. The Pilots would tie the game 21-21 after an and-one free-throw by Eddie Davis with 8:33 left in the first half.

The Pilots got their first lead of the game 23-21 after a dunk by Curtiss Hayden. The Waves built a six-point lead, 29-23, after Jan Zedek's three-point shot with 3:58 left in the first half.

Pepperdine led Portland at halftime by nine-points 40-31. Edwards led the Waves in scoring with 11-points and Chukwuka 9-points. The leading scorer for the Pilots was Michael Henn, with 10-points, and Davis with 9-points.

The Waves made 17 of 33 shots from the floor, 52.0 percent, 5 of 14 from the three-point line, 36.0 percent, and committed eight turnovers. The Pilots made 13 of 29 shots from the floor, 45.0 percent, the three-point line 3 of 12, 25.0 percent, and ten turnovers.

Pepperdine had their largest lead of the game in the second half, fifteen-points, 48-33, after a put-back basket by Edwards with 15:45 left in the game. The Waves pulled away from the Pilots, leading 52-39, after a three-pointer by Davis.

Portland was down 65-49 after Darry Polk Jr. two free throws with 5:24 left in the game. The Waves led by eleven points 68-57 with two free throws by Chukwuka. Pepperdine beat Portland 80-65 to get their first win in the West Coast Conference.

"It was a great win to get our first win in the conference, "Kessler Edwards said. "We have the whole team back and had only one practice for this game, but we have a lot of work in front of us."

Edwards led the Waves in scoring with 21-points, and Chukwuka 14-points. Davis was the leading scorer for the Pilots with 19-points, Latrell Jones 15-points, and Michael Henn 14-points.

After the game, Pepperdine head coach Lorenzo Romar spoke on getting their first in the West Coast Conference this season.

It's was a great win to beat Portland at home, and having everybody back, we were able to do more substitutions and change our defensive schemes because of the players we were able to put on the court."

"We didn't play well in our non-conference games, and I'm not taking anything away from the teams we played, but without any practices, and some players were out, now we will be able to have a full week of practice to get better."
