Gonzaga Too Much for Pepperdine in 97-75 Victory

1/31/21 MALIBU, Ca - The # 1 rank team in the country, the Gonzaga Bulldogs (16-0, WCC 7-0), travel to Malibu, California, to take on the Pepperdine Waves (7-7, WCC 3-2). The Bulldogs swept the series by defeating the Waves 97-75. Colbey Ross reached a milestone of scoring his 2000th points in his career at Pepperdine.

Corey Kispert (F) is the leading scorer for Gonzaga averaging 20.5 ppg, Drew Timme (F) 18.7 ppg, Jalen Center (G) 14.1 ppg, Joel Ayayi (G) 11.9 ppg, and Anton Watson (F) 7.8 ppg.

Kessler Edwards (F) leads Pepperdine in scoring with 18.3 ppg, Corey Ross (G) 16.5 ppg, Kene Chukwuka (F) 8.3 ppg, and Altman Sedrick (G) 6.6 ppg.

Pepperdine jumped out on Gonzaga 7-2 after a power dunk by Kene Chuwuka. The Waves increase their lead to 11-4, after a reverse layup by Corey Ross.

Corey Kispert's jump shot had Gonzaga down 11-7. Altman Sedrick's layup gave Pepperdine a 15-7 with 15:14 left in the first half. The Bulldogs trail 16-13 after a jump shot by Aton Watson.

The Bulldogs got their first lead of the game 17-16, after a reverse layup by Aaron Cook with 11:16 left in the first half. Corey Kispert's three-pointer gave Gonzaga a five-point lead 21-16.

The Bulldogs went on a 4-2 run, and a layup by Timme Drew gave them a 25-18. Drew made a pair of free throws that gave Gonzaga a ten-point lead 28-18 with 8:24 left in the first half.

Aaron Cook's dunk with 8:26 left in the first half gave Gonzaga a fifteen-point lead, 36-21. A jump shot by Zedrick had the Waves down 40-26.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 47-30, after a layup by Joel Ayayi with 2:35 left in the first half. Pepperdine trail Gonzaga by fifteen-points at halftime 49-34.

Kessler Edwards led the Waves in scoring with 9-points, followed by Ross and Altman, both with 8-points. The Bulldogs leading scorer was Cook with 12-points, Kispert 11-points, and Drew 10-points.

In the first half Pepperdine made 14 of 33 shots from the floor, 42.4 percent, 2 of 9 from the three-point arc, 22.2 percent, and nine turnovers. Gonzaga made 18 of 29 shots, 62.1 percent, 5 of 13 from the three-point arc, 38.5 percent, and ten turnovers.

Gonzaga led in the second half 53-34, after a basket by Drew. Sedrick's three-point basket had Pepperdine down 53-37. Kispert was foul on his layup and made the and-one giving the Bulldogs a twenty-point lead 57-37 with 16:16 left in the game.

Ross three-pointer had the Waves down 60-43. Andrew Nembhard's three-point shot gave the Bulldogs a 68-45 lead with 12:50 left in the game. Ross made another three-point shot that made the score 71-51.

Pepperdine trail Gonzaga 79-56 after a jump shot by Kessler with 8:39 left in the game. The Bulldogs led 85-56 after a layup by Jalen Suggs. Sedrick jump shot had the Waves down 85-58 with 6:43 left in the game.

The Bulldogs had their largest lead of the game thirty-points, 90-60, when Ayayi stole the ball and made a layup. Kendall Munson's layup made the score 93-64 with 3:40 left in the game.

A pair of free throws by Jay Yoon had Pepperdine down 95-73 with 1:19 left in the game. Julian Strawther had a monster two-handed dunk at the end of the game that had his teammates up on their feet, as Gonzaga beat Pepperdine 97-75 for the second time this season.

"Gonzaga took advantage when we were negligent with the ball and made us pay for it," coach Lorenzo Romar said. "They exploited us and exposed every weakness that we had. It's that simple. We can talk about improving, but they were better than us."

Drew led Gonzaga with 19-points six rebounds, Andrew Nembhard 17-points, Kispert 16-points, and Aaron Cook 15-points. Ross led Pepperdine in scoring with 16-points, Altman 14-points, and Kessler 11-points. The Waves committed 15 turnovers that led to 22 points for the Bulldogs.

"We have to do a much better job of taking care of the basketball, especially when you play a time like Gonzaga, they made us pay for the turnovers we committed tonight," Colbey Ross said.
