1/8/21 LOS ANGELES, Ca - The USC Trojans Women's Basketball team (4-5) rebounded from a loss on the road to the Oregon Ducks 92-69 last Friday, and was victorious at the Galen Center as they defeated the Utah Utes (3-6), 60-59 in a Friday night thriller.
USC trail Utah 6-2 in the first quarter after a three-pointer by Kemmery Mart?n, and trail at the end of the quarter the Utes 21-17, but were able to stay close during the second quarter.
The Utes finished the first half leading the Trojans 37-36, and Bryanna Maxwell led her team in scoring with 13 points. Jordan Sanders led the Trojans in scoring with 12 points, which kept the game in striking distance.
The Utes made 9 of 24 shots from the field, and 5 of 10 three-pointers in the first half, while the Trojans struggled shooting from behind the three-point arc, making 2 of 5 shots in the first half.
The Trojans made some half-time adjustments that kept the game close at the end of the third quarter, trailing the Utes by four points 51-47.
The showdown came down in the fourth quarter, with both teams battling back and forth. The Trojans had a five-point lead 60-55, after a basket by Sanders in the paint with 3:06 left in the game.
The Utes found themselves down by one-points 60-59 after a jump shot by Niyah Becker with 2:14 left in the game, but neither team could score a basket in the last two minutes of the game.
The Utes, with two seconds, still had an opportunity to win the game at the end, but Maxwell attempted a three-point shot that bounced off of the rim, and the Trojans dodged a bullet to get the win.
Endyia Rogers finished the game with 17 points, playing just twenty-five minutes, combined with Jordan Sanders 14 points and five rebounds, and Angel Jackson 12 points help pave the way for a nail-biting last-minute game.
Maxwell scored 20 points, and Dru Gylten had 15 points, carried the Utes throughout most of the game. The Utes, still with two seconds left on the clock, had a chance to win the game, but Maxwell's three-point shot attempt didn't fall for her, and the Trojans escape with a 60-59 victory.
Both teams didn't do a great job taking care of the basketball was one of the main reasons why the game was so close. The Trojans committed 20 turnovers, and the Utes committed 18 turnovers in the game.
The Trojans will face the Colorado Buffaloes in their next match on Monday, instead of this Sunday. Meanwhile, the Utah Utes take on the UCLA Bruins on Sunday.
