10/18/19 LOS ANGELES, CA - The USC Trojans representing the Pac-12 Conference, defeated the Villanova Wildcats from the Big East Conference 72-61 in a charity preseason exhibition game, raising money for the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation.
The Trojans leading scorers were Redshirt Senior guard Daniel Utomi, 15 points, and Freshman forward Onyeka Okongwu 15 points 10 rebounds, Elijah Weaver 11 points, and Jonah Mathews 10 points.
The Wildcats leading scorers were Freshman forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl with 20 points 9 rebounds, Saddiq Bey 16 points and Jermaine Samuels 11points.
At the end of the first half, Villanova led USC 28-27, making 9 of 31 shots from the floor 29.0 percent, and USC 10 of 22 shots from the floor 45.5 percent. The Trojans committed 11 turnovers and the Wildcats 6 turnovers.
Both teams were a little sluggish in the first half, but the Trojans 10 fastbreak points, Utomi's 12 points, and their bench adding 14 points kept them close in the first half.
In the second half, USC went on a 10-2 run led by Okongwu 13 points and the Trojans scoring 45 points pulled away from Villanova to secure the 72-61 eleven-point victory.
The 5000 plus fans were treated to a very exciting preseason game, and giving Villanova head coach Jay Wright, and USC head coach Andy Enfield a glimpse of the future for both teams this season.
"It was a great game for us," said USC head coach Andy Enfield. "It was important to get off to a good start in the preseason, showing some offense and defense and some toughness. I want to thank Villanova. They did this for charity. That was 2 good teams. It wasn't a preseason scrimmage, it was a terrific college basketball game."
