11/25/20 LOS ANGELES, Ca -The USC Trojans' first game of the season was a non-conference game against the LMU Lions at the Galen Center one day before Thanksgiving, came away with an 85-55 victory.
Today would be the debut for two of USC's top recruits, Madison Campbell (G), a red-shirt freshman, and Amaya Oliver (G/F), also a freshman.
The Trojans led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter. LMU had a hard time keeping up with the tempo that USC was playing. Madison Campbell, the Red-Shirt freshman, was forcing the action attacking the basket.
USC led 29-17 in the second quarter forcing LMU to take another timeout with 5:42 left in the first half. USC closed out the half leading LMU 41-28.
Campbell led USC in scoring with 10 points, followed by Desiree Caldwell 9 points. Natalia Klimek and Megan Mandel with 8 points. The Trojans forced the Lions to commit nine turnovers.
The Trojans were up 50-34 in the third quarter, during a media time out. Ciera Ellington and Khari Clark were doing all they could to keep LMU in the game, both with eight points.
USC's starting forward was having a good game with 14 points and 13 rebounds already in the third quarter. USC led LMU 62-46 at the end of the third quarter.
LMU was down by twenty-six points 78-52 with 3:01 left in the game as USC continued to flex their muscles on offense. The Trojans went on to beat the Lions by thirty-points 85-55 to get their first win of the season.
After the game, I ask the Trojans head coach Mark Trakh did anything surprise him about the game today.
"I was surprised how well our offense played tonight, being our first game of the season. For the first five minutes of the game, they looked winded, but after that, they got their legs under them and just kept the tempo of the game up."
Campbell, who had five three-pointers, led her team in scoring with 19 points, Oliver had the first double-double of her career with 17 points 16 rebounds, Endyia Rogers 13 points, and Angel Jackson and Cadwell both with 13 points.
Ellington and Mandel led LMU in scoring both with 13 points, followed by Clark 12 points and Klimek 11 points. The Trojans defense held the Lions to nine-points in the fourth quarter.
USC had 34 points in the paint, compared to LMU 22 points. The Trojans committed 11 turnovers, and the Lions had 20 turnovers. The Trojans' next game will be on December 1, on the road to take on the Arizona Sun Devils. For more photos from this game, click on the link below.
