Pepperdine comes up short in 81-74 loss to LMU

2/26/21 MALIBU, Ca - The Pepperdine Waves have lost two games in a roll, one to Santa Clara and the other to Saint Mary's, and now had to face their cross-town rivals, the LMU Lions, in the 174th edition of the PCH Cup rivalry and came up short and lost 81-74.


Colbey Ross led Pepperdine in scoring with 25-points, Kessler Edwards 14-points, Victor Ohia Obicha 11-points, and Sedrick Altman 10-points.


Keli Leaupepe was the leading scorer for LMU with 17-points, Jalin Anderson with 16-points, Mattias Markusson with 15-points, and Joe Quintana 12-points.


LMU got on the scoreboard first in the first half to take a 3-0 lead after a three-pointer by Jalin Anderson. The Lions led 6-2 after Eli Scott made a three-point shot.


Pepperdine trail 6-4 after two free throws by Kessler Edwards with 14:57 left in the first half. The Lions pushed their lead up to 11-6 when Joe Quintana made a three-point shot.


The Waves went on a 7-2 run, and Colbey Ross had the Waves down by two-points, 13-11, after making a three-point shot with 10:48 left in the first half.


Quintana had the Lions leading 21-14 after making another three-pointer with 8:29 left in the first half. The Waves were down 23-19 after Ross's three-pointer. Ross made another three-pointer that now made the score 27-22.

The Waves went on a 4-0 run and baskets by Sedrick Altman and Jade Smith, now trail by one-points, 27-26. Jan Zidek tied the game 31-31 after making a three-pointer with 3:51 left in the first half.


The Lions regained the lead 33-31 after a pair of free throws by Keli Leaupepe. Jalin Anderson's jump-shot gave the Lions a 38-33. LMU led at halftime by five-points, 40-35, when Quintana made a layup before the buzzer went off to end the half.


Ross led Pepperdine in scoring with 11-points, Victor Ohia-Obioha 6-points, and Altman 5-points. Mattias Markusson led LMU in scoring with 9-points, Quintana 8-points, and Scott 7-points.


The Waves made 13 of 26 shots from the floor, 56.5 percent, 5 of 8 from the three-point arc, 62.5 percent, and committed seven turnovers. The Lions made 16 of 35 shots from the floor, 45.7 percent, 4 of 15 shots from the three-point arc, 26.7 percent, and committed two turnovers.


LMU, in the second half, went on a 12-6 run and now led 52-41, after a basket by Kessler Edwards. Markusson gave the Lions a thirteen-point lead, 58-45, with 10:49 left in the game.

The Waves trail 61-49 after a three-point shot by Leaupepe. Ross made another three-pointer that had the Waves trailing 63-52 with 7:29 left in the game. Anderson's three-pointer gave LMU a fourteen-point lead, 70-56.


Pepperdine trail LMU 72-59 after Edwards fought for a loose ball and went up for a layup with 4:31 left in the game. Kessler made a pair of free throws to trail by eight-points, 72-64.


The Waves led by nine-points 75-66 after a pair of free-throws by Quintana with 1:24 left in the game. Altman made a three-pointer that made the score 72-78.


Ross's jump shot had the Waves down 79-74 with 5 seconds left in the game. LMU held on to beat Pepperdine 81-74 and improved their record to (12-7, WCC, 7-4), and the Waves fell to (10-11, WCC, 6-6).
