Briuns Escape against Cal in Overtime 74-70

2/9/20 BERKELEY, CA - The California Golden Bears Women's Basketball Team had a great opportunity to knock off the #10 rank team in the country, the UCLA Bruins, came up short in a thriller in overtime, loss 74-70 at Haas Pavilion.

The Bruins' Michaela Onyenwere led the her team in scoring with 21 points, Charisma Osbourne 17 points, and Natalie Chou 12 points. Cal had four players scoring in double figures, Jaelyn Brown 17 points, Cailyn Crocker 12 points, Leilani McIntosh 11 points, and CJ West had a double-double 11 points also, and 12 rebounds.

In the first quarter, the Bruins led 17-11 after a three-points shot by Jaden Owens with 3:46 left in the quarter. Lauryn Miller from UCLA made the score 22-11 with 58 seconds in the quarter, but Cal's Alaysia Styles layup, and a free throw by Evelien Schiph made the score 22-14 at the end of the quarter.

Cal in the second quarter scored first, but Osborne from the UCLA scored the next five-points increasing the Bruins lead to 27-16. Despite three-pointer from Brown and Sara Anastasieska, Cal was still down 32-22 with 4:22 left before halftime.

Cal closed out the quarter with an impressive 10-4 run, trail UCLA at halftime 36-32. Osborne led all players in scoring with 13 points. Cal did a great job getting to the free throw line making 10-14 shots, compare to UCLA gettingto the free throw line just one time. UCLA was blazzing from the three-point arc making 7-12 shots.

UCLA had a one-point lead, 48-47 with 1:33 left in the third quarter after a basket by Onyenwere. Onyenwere scored on back-to-back baskets as the Bruins led 52-48 at the end of the quarter.

With 3:56 left in the fourth quarter, Cal's Cailyn Crocker made a basket making the score 61-57 in favor of UCLA. UCLA led 63-61, before CJ West tied the game 63-63 after making two free throws to send the game into overtime.

Cal got their first lead of the game in overtime 65-32 after a jump shot by Leilani McIntosh. UCLA would regain the lead 67-65 after a layup by Onyenwere with 3:17 left in overtime. Cals' Jaelyn Brown made a three-point shot that tied the game 70-70 with 1:37 left in the game.

UCLA got the lead back 72-70 when Onyenwere scored a layup with 27 seconds, and Japreece Dean secure the game with two big free throws with 16 seconds, and UCLA escape with 74-70 overtime victory.
