3/1/20 LOS ANGELES, CA - In a 90-minute time frame, one-shot was the difference-maker. On his 31st birthday, Carlos Vela displayed a world-class chip shot giving LAFC a 1-0 victory over the newly integrated Inter Miami CF.
The 2019 Golden Boot winner kept the ball rolling in the 2020 season debut on his quest to repeat as the league-leading goal scorer.
Vela seemed determined to score throughout the game, putting three of his five shots on target. The Mexican phenom's aggression came into fruition after a nice sequence of dribbling through defenders transpired to a wondrous chip-shot over Miami' goalkeeper Luis Robles.
Miami looked like a newly formed squad. David Beckham's team was dominated on the pitch by LAFC. Los Angeles controlled 61% of possession.
Robles' effort didn't go unnoticed. He did all that he could to keep his team in the match with eight saves against LAFC who had a league-best 21 wins.
Dutch goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer was the man of the match earning his first MLS shutout victory. Miami had multiple chances to get the ball, including a late free-kick from former LAFC midfielder Lee Nguyen, which was blocked and cleared out of danger.
