3/20/22 LOS ANGELES, CA - LAFC remains unbeaten on the season after a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday night at the Banc of California. Ryan Hollingshead scored two goals and Carlos Vela scored a goal.
This is Hollingshead's first season with the LAFC after spending eight seasons with FC Dallas and this is the first time he scores two goals in one game. Los Angeles FC improves to 3-0-1 and sits atop the Western Conference with 10 points.
“Another home game and another victory, which makes us happy,” LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said. “We are happy with the result and very happy with the reaction after going down with a goal in the first half.”
Vancouver got on the board first with a goal from Tristan Blackmon in the 12th minute. The former LAFC defender spent four seasons with the Black and Gold. Hollingshead got the equalizer in the 27th minute on a header from a corner kick.
Vela had two shots saved by the Whitecaps goalkeeper before scoring from close range to give LAFC a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute. Kwadwo Opoku got through the defense and sent the assist to Vela who finished with the left foot. This was Vela’s fourth goal of the young season.
In the 70th minute, Hollingshead sent a rocket from the top of the box into the net to give LAFC a 3-1 lead. Whitecaps goalkeeper Thomas Hasal had six saves but couldn’t save the right-footed shot from Hollingshead.
“It is a good feeling,” Hollingshead said. “As a defender, I am not in goal-scoring opportunities enough to get braces very often but I do sneak some goals in there. Every year I am in the 4 to 5 goal range, which I love but let’s double it up this year.”
The Black and Gold return to action when they hit the road on April 2 for a match against Orlando City SC. The Whitecaps FC will take on Sporting KC on April 2.
