5/22/21 LOS ANGELES, CA - Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, and the Los Angeles Clippers (47-25) hosted the first round of the Western Conference, had their hands full with the Dallas Mavericks (42-30), came up empty, and loss 113-103 in Game 1.
The Mavs jumped out on the Clippers 11-4 in the first quarter after Luka Doncic driving layup. The Mavs increased their lead to 17-6 after a three-pointer by Tim Hardaway Jr., forcing the Clippers to call a time out.
Kawhi Leonard's jump shot had the Clippers trailing the Mavs 19-10. Ivica Zubac's tip-in basket had the Clippers down 24-17, and the Mavs called a time out.
The Clippers defense began to clamp down on the Mavs offense and went on an 8-5 run and closed the gap on the Mavs 29-25 after a basket by Leonard.
The Clippers trail the Mavs at the end of the quarter by three points 33-30. Leonard had 13-points for the Clippers and Doncic 12-points for the Mavs.
Nicolas Batum's reverse layup had the Clippers down 33-32 in the second quarter. Rajon Rondo tied the game, 40-40, with his jump shot with 7:07 left in the first half. Rondo's three-pointer gave the Clippers their first lead of the game, 43-40.
Paul George tied the game again 49-49, making a pair of free throws. Patrick Beverly's jump shot helped the Clippers regain the lead 51-49 with 3:32 left in the game.
Donic made a three-point shot that gave the Mavs a 54-51 lead over the Clippers, and Haredaway Jr.'s three-pointer pushed the lead up to 57-53 with 1:03 left in the game.
The Clippers trail the Mavs at halftime 60-55. Leonard had 17-points at halftime, and George was 1 of 7 from the floor with 7-points. Rondo gave the Clippers a big lift off the bench with 6-points.
The leading scorer for the Mavs was Donic with 21-points and Hardaway Jr. with 11-points. The Clippers shot 42.4 percent from the floor, making 19 of 43 shots, and the Mavs shot 51.3 percent from the floor made 20 of 39 shots.
The Clippers trail the Mavs in the third quarter 68-60 when Donic made another three-point shot. George made a jump shot that had the Clippers down by three points, 68-65.
Leonard stole the ball from the Mavs' Hardaway Jr., drove down the court, and made a monster dunk, and the Clippers now trail 75-73. The Clippers trailed the Mavs at the end of the third quarter, 86-80.
Dorian Finney-Smith's three-point shot had the Mavs up by one-point 95-94 with 6:55 left in the game. Rondo made a three-point shot to give the Clippers the lead back 97-95.
The Mavs took the lead back 100-98 after a three-pointer by Hardaway Jr. with 4:15 left in the game. George tied the game 100-100 with his jump shot. Finney-Smith gave the Mavs back the lead 103-100 with another three-point shot.
George made a two-hand dunk that made the score 107-102. Kristaps Porzingis made a pair of free throws to give the Mavs a five-point lead with 1:41 left on the clock. Porzings' dunk had the Mavs leading 109-102 with 59.3 left in the game.
The Clippers defense went to sleep in the fourth quarter, and Leonard would score the last points for the Clippers with a free throw, and the Mavs beat the Clippers 113-103 to take the first game of the seven-game series.
Leonard finished the game with 26-points, George 23-points, and Rondo and Batum both with 11-points. Donic led the Mavs in scoring with 31-points, Hardaway Jr. with 21-points, Finney-Smith 18-points, and Jalen Brunson 15-points.
