8/2/20 Phoenix, Arizona - The Los Angeles Dodgers received a big lift when Clayton Kershaw (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings, and six strikeouts in his debut to defeat Kelly Merell (1-1) and the Arizona D-Backs 3-0 in his first game of the season.
Kershaw has missed nine games because of lower back soreness, but today there were no signs of stiffness, and the control of his pitches was razor-sharp against the D-Backs' batters.
Merell gave up two early runs in the top of the first inning after Justin Turner got on base, and Cody Bellinger hit the ball over the right-field wall to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
The Dodgers added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Mookie Betts hit his first home run of the season over the right-field wall off of Merell to increased their lead to 3-0.
With the win, the Dodgers swept the series to improve their record to (7-3), and the D-Backs fell to (3-7).
The Dodgers will travel to San Diego for a three-game series with the Padres on Monday, and the D-Backs will host a three-game series starting Tuesday with the Houston Astros. #MLB #Dodgers #DBacks #mlbbaseball #ClaytonKershaw #MookieBetts #CodyBellinger #JustinTurner #KellyMerill #TGSportstv1
