8/6/22 LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Dodgers (74-33) took the second game of the three-game series against the San Diego Padres (61-49) by beating them 8-3 at Dodgers Stadium.
Andrew Heaney (1-0), the starting pitcher for the Dodgers, pitched 4.2 innings and gave up four hits and three runs before being replaced by Chris Martin (3-0), who picked up the win.
The Padres starting pitcher Mike Clevinger (3-4) pitched 4.2 innings and gave seven hits, five runs, and two home runs.
Heaney gave up a double to Jurickson Profar in the top of the first inning, but Mookie Betts with his catch robbed Juan Sota of an RBI single in right field with a base runner on third base with one out.
Heaney held the Padres scoreless by getting Manny Machado to pop up and striking out Josh Bell.
Will Smith gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run over the left-center field fence.
The Dodgers would lead 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single by Smith that scored Betts.
The Padres trailed 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning after Brandon Drury doubled and Juan Sota scored. Jake Cronenworth hit a single that allowed Josh Bell to come home and tied the game 2-2.
The Padres took the lead 3-2 after Will Myers singled to right field and Drury scored.
Betts stole second base in the bottom of the fifth inning and advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly ball by Freddie Freeman. Moments later, Smith advances to first base after being hit by a ball from Clevinger.
Max Muncy gave the lead back to the Dodgers 5-3 with a three-run home run that scored Betts and Smith over the right field fence, his second in four games.
The Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes that Muncy is starting to find his way back to being the old Muncy who swung a hot bat last season before getting injured.
"He's been on the come the last ten days," Roberts said. "Certainly the results [have been there], and it was a big at-bat, a big hit for us. That continues to build confidence. Like all players, you still need to see results."
The Dodgers led 7-3 after Freeman hit a sacrifice fly ball that scored Betts and Trea Turner advanced to third base, and Smith had a sacrifice fly ball that brought Turner home to score.
Cody Bellinger made the final score 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning by hitting a double, and Gavin Lux came home to score.
