Santa Clara Holds On to Beat Pepperdine 86-82

2/20/21 SANTA CLARA, Ca - The Santa Clara Broncos (10-6, WCC, 4-4) had their biggest win of the season by beating the Pepperdine Waves (10-9, WCC 6-4) 86-82, closing out their three-game homestand.


Josip Vrankic led the Broncos in scoring with 26 points, Jalen Williams 17 points, and Christian Carlyle with 16 points. Colbey Ross led the Waves in scoring with 26 points, Jan Zidek 18 points, and Edward Kessler 11 points.


The Broncos had a 9-2 lead in the first half after a layup by Josip Vrankic. The Waves found themselves down by ten-points, 14-4, when Guglielmo made a layup. Colbey Ross'sthree-pointer had Pepperdine within four-points, 17-14, with 11:37 left in the first half.


The Waves tied the game 17-17 after Ross made a layup. Sedrick Altman made two free throws to give Pepperdine their first lead of the game, 19-17. Pepperdine led 28-23 after a pair of free throws by Jade Smith with 5:08 left in the first half.

The Broncos were down by one-point, 28-27, after Christian Carlyle nail a jump shot with 3:28 left in the first half. Jaden Bediako made two free throws to give the Broncos a 31-30 lead. Santa Clara led at halftime 34-32.


Vrankic led Santa Clara in scoring in the first half with 14 points and Carlyle 8 points. Ross led Pepperdine with 15 points, Victor Ohia Obioha 5 points, and Altman and smith both with 4 points.


The Broncos made 9 of 25 shots from the floor, 36.0 percent, and committed eight turnovers. Pepperdine made 10 of 25 shots from the floor, 40.0 percent, and committed seven turnovers.


In the second half, the Broncos were up by five-points, 50-45, when Jalen Williams made a three-point shot with 15:00 minutes left in the game. Darryl Polk Jr. made two free throws that had the Waves trailing by one-points, 53-52.

Caruso would make a layup to put the Broncos up 62-58 with 11:14 left in the game. Santa Clara went on an 8-2 run to lead by ten-points, 70-60, when Carylye made a three-point shot.


Pepperdine would go on a 10-5 run to trail Santa Clara 75-70 after Ross made a three-point shot with 6:18 left in the game. Vrankic made two free throws to give the Broncos an 82-77 lead, with 2:50 left in the game.


With 18 seconds left in the game, Pepperdine was down by two-points, 84-82, after Ross made a free throw. The Waves had a chance to tie the game 84-84, but Ross driving to the basket, crashed into a defender, and a referee called an offensive foul on the play.


Williams would make a pair of free throws to secure the 86-82 victory over the Pepperdine Waves in West Coast Conference play.
