3/29/22 ARIZONA - As the Dodgers wrap up their final week of Spring Training in Arizona, the team sent pitcher Tony Gonsolin on the mound Tuesday night at Camelback Ranch against the Oakland A's, won 6-4. Gonsolin did not have the sharpest outing as he gave up four earned runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings.
"Part of the efficiency is to command the baseball, I think Clayton (Kershaw), for example, has been efficient throughout his career because he can command the baseball," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "When you don't have command of the baseball with your entire pitch sequence, it's hard to be efficient."
A much stronger start in Gonsolin's last outing showcased real promise and will be needed in the Dodgers' quest to become World Champions this coming season.
The Dodgers are in the top five of pitching staff according to most reports, however, Gonsolin will round out the rotation with former Angel and current Dodger Andrew Heaney.
"I think if you look at it right now, it's pretty easy to see that Tony is projecting to be that (fifth) guy," Roberts said. "He's building up. He's done it before. He has the weapons to be a starter. So I think that's kind of where we see it now."
Gonsolin is entering into his fourth season with the Dodgers and is looking to turn the page from a very injury-plagued season in 2021, there are signs he is pointing in the positive direction despite the start against the A's.
He said he feels healthy, which is important for the Dodgers to keep a strong rotation against their opponents this season, especially in the NL West.
The Dodgers will face stiff competition against the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies, two teams they will face approximately 76 times and have improved their rosters.
Gonsolin could be the key piece that will add a rotation that consists of Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Julio Urias, and Heaney that will have opposing lineups in fits trying to hit against them. #mlb #ladodgers #oaklandathlectics #tonygonsolin #tgsportstv1 #dodgersspringtraining #tgsportstv1
