LOS ANGELES, CA - In front of a sold-out crowd at Loyola Marymount University, the Los Angeles Rams opened up their practices to the public for the first time this week.

After years of training camps held at UC Irvine, the Rams moved this year’s camp closer to home, with the Loyola campus being only a five-mile drive from SoFi Stadium.

Fans were electric during practice, especially when new acquisition Davante Adams took the field. The Rams signed the three-time All-Pro wideout to a two-year, $46-million contract in the off season to complement rising star Puka Nakua, after the departure of Cooper Kupp. Adams looks to terrorize NFC West defensive coordinators this season after years of lighting up the Rams defense.

“When the lights come on it’s scary,” said Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula. “He’s definitely somebody you got to be aware of where he’s at on every single play.”

Adams looked to be in great shape, running crisp routes against his new Rams teammates and frequently locking in with head coach Sean McVay after plays to discuss strategy.

Despite McVay’s normal fiery intensity, a lighter mood settled in during the opening days of training camp. Laughing and joking among the players, most of whom donned bucket hats in place of helmets and pads under the summer heat, resembling OTAs.

The lighter festive mood during parts of practice thoroughly entertained the thousands of fans. This was on display when defensive players ambushed a water boy on the sideline, lifting the shocked attendant unexpectedly, leading to laughter between them that spread throughout the stands.

Fans got to see the chemistry already being established by their dynamic duo of receivers as Nakua spoke glowingly of his newfound teammate.

“I asked Davante to lead our position group drills. There is a respect for him coming in saying ‘I don’t want to push you out of the way, to take your spot and be number one.’ I’ve been blessed to be around great people like Coop and to have Davante come in.”

The Rams ground attack was on display as ongoing contract negotiations didn’t deter All-Pro running back Kyren Williams from hitting the field. Williams looked fresh, slicing out of the backfield during tackle-less drills. With the option of holding out on the table, the Rams lead back instead chose to touch grass and let his agent take care of the off-field negotiations.

“Being here right now is a no-brainer, because I’ve got people I’ve got to take care of,” said Williams. “I play football, that’s what I love.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Defensive Rookie-of-the-Year Jared Verse looks to continue making his presence felt both on the field and in the locker room, continuing to fill the void the retirement of Rams legend Aaron Donald left prior to last season.

Verse’s intensity both on and off the field, coupled with his ability to thrive with tough coaching, sets the culture for the defense. That intensity was on display as Verse revealed his first-ever offseason workout with Donald.

“I show up at eleven in the morning thinking it would be a one-hour workout, he doesn’t even say hi, he says ‘Come on,” said Verse. “After 45 minutes he says are you ready for the real workout? We go to the weight room, it’s all arms. I’m there for an hour and a half and his wife came in laughing and I told her to call the police! I’m dead serious, not joking. I tried to lie and say my mom was at my house and I had to let her in. He told me to give my keys to his assistant, and they’d let her in. So I wasn’t leaving. I had plans to jump in the sauna, didn’t happen. I had plans to watch film, it didn’t happen. I went home and didn’t work out for a day and a half cause I couldn’t move my body.”

Verse’s reveal was the news of the day as the talented linebacker who looked downright unstoppable last season continues to show why the future of the Rams defense is in safe, albeit tired hands.

The Rams have another week of training camp left before they face the Dallas Cowboys in their first preseason game, Saturday, August 9th, at SoFi Stadium.
