UCLA Improves to 6-0 after beating Southern University 88-37 at Pauley Pavilion

WESTWOOD, CA - The Southern University Jaguars (SWAC) came to Pauley Pavilion to take on the No. 3-ranked UCLA Bruins (Big Ten), and when the dust settled, lost 88-37 with Angela Dugalic scoring 20 points, Kiki Rice with 17 points, Lauren Betts with 15 points and 6 rebounds, and Lena Bilic with 14 points.
The Jaguars were led in scoring by DeMya Porter with 8 points and Anaja Hall with 6 points. Southern made 16 of 56 shots from the floor, 28.6% and 3pt range, 2 of 17, 11.8%, while UCLA made 33 of their 56 shots for 50.8%, and from 3pt range, 10 for 28, for 35.7%. The Bruins out-rebounded the Jaguars 50 to 30.
The Jaguars' head coach, Carlos Funchess, knew that when he scheduled games against UCLA, Washington, Arizona, and the University of Houston, they would benefit from playing bigger schools to prepare for the SWAC Conference.

DeMya Porter would tie the game 4-4 with a jump shot from the left side of the basket. The UCLA Bruins took a 10-7 lead in the first quarter with a layup by Lauren Betts. The Bruins would lead 22-9 to end the first period with a three-pointer by Lena Bilic.
UCLA jumped out to a 30-9 lead in the second quarter with a layup by Kiki Rice. Southern trailed at halftime 49-9 after a free throw by Betts.
Bilic and Dugalic led UCLA in scoring with 12 points, and Rice with 9 points. The Bruins were 7-15 from three-point range, 46.7%, and from the floor, 18-35, 51.4%. Southern made 4-14 shots in the first quarter and was 0-13.
The Jaguars trailed 54-12 in the third quarter with a three-pointer by Jaylia Reed. Betts’ jump shot gave the Bruins a 60-14 lead with 5:17 left in the quarter.
Southern trailed 60-16 with a jump shot by Anaja Hall. The Jaguars trailed 72-21 at the end of the third quarter after Jocelyn Tate was fouled on her three-point shot attempt with 0.2 seconds left on the clock, and made all three free throws.
Amanda Muse, with her put-back layup, gave UCLA a 75-25 lead in the fourth quarter. Mykayla Cunningham’s jump shot from the left side of the basket had Southern down 77-27. Gianna Kneepkens would knock down a three-pointer to give UCLA an 82-27 lead with 5:26 left in the game.
The Bruins would close out the game 88-37 to improve their record to (6-0), and the Jaguars would fall to (1-4). UCLA's next home game will be next Sunday against Tennessee at 1:30 pm.
